Sally Thoren first joined Gateway Foundation in 1982 as a college intern and became a full-time employee upon graduating. Sally has served in many roles at Gateway Foundation during her career: counselor, admissions staff, assistant program director, program director, regional director and now serves as the executive director for Gateway Foundation’s services in Chicago. She also manages Gateway Foundation’s relationships with many institutional funders.
Over the course of her 35-year career, Sally has seen substance use treatment evolve from a fragmented, hierarchical “behavior modification” approach to a person-centered, trauma-informed, medication-assisted, multidisciplinary approach. She has championed the work in the field, earning the Vince Bakeman Memorial Advocacy award in 2010.
Sally earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Carleton College and also studied law at DePaul University.
